Four crew members died and six were missing today after a Panama-registered cargo vessel ran aground in heavy seas off the northern Taiwanese coast.

Another 11 sailors were rescued, the coastguard said.

The Taiwanese Defence Ministry said the ship with 21 crew members broke into two after colliding into rocks off the shore of the port of Keelung in the early hours. The crew members' nationalities were not known.

The ministry said rescuers were looking for the missing.

Taiwan has been under the influence of Typhoon Nalgae throughout the weekend.

The storm pummelled the northern Philippines on Saturday before moving towards China's Hainan island.
