An explosion at around 7pm (local time) in the centre of the Thai capital Bangkok that killed at least 20 people has seen authorities scrambling as spectulation mounts over who is responsible.
As many as 20 people have died in the suspected pipe bomb, with 140 injured. The toll is expected to rise in the course of today. One Japanese citizen is reportedly among the seriously injured.
Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha told reporters the bombing was "the worst incident that has ever happened in Thailand".
Of the perpetrators he told Reuters: "I have seen the footage, we have some suspects but it is not so clear. We have to find them first."
The country's defence minister said that it was "much clearer" who the bombers were, "but I can't reveal right now," said Prawit Wongsuwan. The minister added that the bombers intentions had been to discredit the government and harm the economy.
