Obama, Pelosi and McConnell lead US tributes to Queen Elizabeth: ‘A masterclass in grace’

The late Queen is the only British monarch to have ever addressed the US Congress

Senior US leaders and lawmakers offered tributes on Thursday to the late Queen Elizabeth II after Buckingham Palace announced her passing at age 96.

Writing on Twitter, Vice President Kamala Harris said the Queen had “lived an incredible life of service and had a profound impact on countless lives and historic events”.

She added that she and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff “send our condolences to the Royal Family and join the people of the United Kingdom and all those around the world who mourn her loss”.

Former president Barack Obama, who twice visited the Queen and was even invited to stay at Buckingham Palace during his time in office, said she had “captivated the world” from the day of her coronation in Westminster Abbey seven decades ago.

Mr Obama said he and his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, “join so many others who are celebrating her life and mourning her passing”.

“Her Majesty was just 25 years old when she took on the enormous task of helming one of the world's great democracies. In the decades that followed, she would go on to make the role of Queen her own-with a reign defined by grace, elegance, and a tireless work ethic, defying the odds and expectations placed on women of her generation,” he said.

Mr Obama said she had welcomed him and his wife “with open arms and extraordinary generosity” when they were first starting out in the White House. He added that he and Ms Obamma were both “struck by her warmth, the way she put people at ease, and how she brought her considerable humor and charm to moments of great pomp and circumstance”.

“Michelle and I are grateful to have witnessed Her Majesty's dedicated leadership, and we are awed by her legacy of tireless, dignified public service. Our thoughts are with her family and the people of the United Kingdom at this difficult time,” he added.

Another of the 14 US presidents who served during her seven decades on the throne, former president Bill Clinton, said in a statement that he and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton mourn her passing and “join with people across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and all around the world, in giving thanks for her extraordinary life”.

“Throughout her remarkable 70-year reign, she led Britain through great transformations with unfailing grace, dignity, and genuine care for the welfare of all its people. In sunshine or storm, she was a source of stability, serenity, and strength,” he said, adding that he and Ms Clinton will “always be grateful” for her kindness during their visits to Buckingham Palace in 1995 and 2000, and for “all she did to deepen the Special Relationship”.

The second-to-last US president to meet her, former president Donald Trump, said on his Truth Social platform that he and former first lady Melania Trump were “deeply saddened” to hear of her death.

“Together with our family and fellow Americans, we send our sincere condolences to the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom during this time of great sorrow and grief,” he said.

In a statement, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the late Queen “a pillar of leadership in the global arena and a devoted friend of freedom” over her 70-year reign.

“Queen Elizabeth embodied the highest spirit of civic duty: earning the reverence of her people and the respect of the world. Her Majesty capably shepherded the United Kingdom through great turbulence and transition,” she said. “Under history’s brightest spotlight, Queen Elizabeth offered a masterclass in grace and strength, power and poise. Her extraordinary life and leadership will continue to inspire young women and girls in public service, now and for generations to come”.

Ms Pelosi added that it was “an honour” for her to have been present on the floor of the House of Representatives when the Queen became the first — and only — British monarch to address the US Congress during a 1991 state visit.

In remarks from the Senate floor, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he joined “with all Americans” to “offer deepest sympathies and prayers to the Royal Family and to the people of the United Kingdom”.

Mr Schumer said it was “hard to fathom” saying goodbye to the late Queen because most Americans — and Britons — “have never lived in a world” without her on the throne.

“In her time, she came to know 15 different prime ministers, fourteen US presidents, travelled to well over 100 countries, and made over 200 official state visits. She was the first British Monarch ever to address a joint session of Congress, and thanks to her, the special relationship between the United States and the U.K. gained even more special significance,” he said.

He said the late Queen was “a rock” and “the living embodiment of the virtues that lie at the core of the nation she so proudly led”.

“I dare say we will never see a leader quite like her for as long as we live,” he added.

The Senate’s top Republican, Senator Mitch McConnell, said in a statement that “all Americans stand with our great friends across the Atlantic” in mourning for the late Queen.

“For 70 long years, from the aftermath of World War II well into the 21st century, across 15 different Prime Ministers, through great triumphs and great challenges, the Queen’s steady leadership safeguarded the land she loved. Despite spending nearly three quarters of a century as one of the most famous and admired individuals on the planet, the Queen made sure her reign was never really about herself — not her fame, not her feelings, not her personal wants or needs,” he said. “She guided venerable institutions through modern times using timeless virtues like duty, dignity, and sacrifice. She offered our contemporary world a living master class it needed badly”.

Mr McConnell added that the Queen’s death is “the entire world’s loss”.

“We Americans join our friends in prayer, in grief, and in gratitude for such a remarkable leader and such a successful reign,” he said.
