Fox and Friends attacks Trump over government shutdown

The typically pro-Donald Trump morning show “Fox & Friends” has slammed the president for failing to follow through on his promise to shutdown the government if Congress does not give him the funds to build a wall on the US-Mexico border.

Jedidiah Bila, the programme’s guest host, lamented the GOP’s inability to secure funds for the border wall in the latest government spending bill. She also suggested that voter base could turn on Mr Trump if he was not able to build the wall, despite the Republicans being able to control both chambers of Congress.

“This is going to be a problem for Republicans,” Ms Bila said. “I think a lot of people who voted for President Trump counted on him on this particular issue, I think their feet were to the fire. And you see a lot of people around the country saying, ‘Hold on a second. You told us that you weren’t afraid to shut down the government, that’s why we like you. What happened? You just gave in right away?'”

Ed Henry, another guest host on the show, rushed to defend Mr Trump to claim “the border is more secure now than it was under President [Barack] Obama.”

But Brian Kilmeade, the host of the daytime programme, quickly and fervently disagreed.

“It seems like chaos,” Mr Kilmeade said of Mr Trump’s handling of the border. “And by the way, the amount of apprehensions has gone up — November, I think, was a record.”

As the threat partial government shutdown continues to loom over Washington, Democrats have been adamant about not conceding to Mr Trump’s demand for $5 billion in funds to build his proposed border wall.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Friday that "President Trump has thrown a temper tantrum and now has us careening towards a Trump shutdown over Christmas." Schumer said.

The New York Democrat said his party will remain unmoved by Mr Trump’s government shutdown thread.

"So, President Trump, you will not get your wall," Mr Schumer added. "Abandon your shutdown strategy. You're not getting the wall today, next week, or on January 3, when Democrats take control of the House."

Congress has until midnight on Friday to come with a resolution for the $5 billion border wall funds or Mr Trump will enact a partial government shutdown.
