A police officer has been shot and killed in Tarpon Springs, Florida, authorities have said.

The US shooting was confirmed by Pinella County Sherrif’s Office. The shooting occurred around 3am and a suspect has been taken into custody.

Cecilia Barreda, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office said the officer was shot and killed in the early hours of Sunday at around 3am in a residential area of Tarpon Springs.

Police have not named the officer or the suspect, and have not given a motive.

The suspect was taken into custody after fleeing the scene and crashing into a pole and another vehicle, police said.

The shooting came just hours after two New York Police officers were shot dead in their patrol car in Brooklyn on Saturday.

The two officers have been identified as father-of-two Rafael Ramos and newly-wed Wenjian Liu.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said the pair were “assassinated… targeted for their uniform” by a suspect who then ran into a nearby subway station and shot himself in the head.
