Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. There’s a trending GoFundMe fundraiser that’s encouraging whistleblowers to leak racist recordings of Donald Trump from his time hosting The Apprentice.
The Sunlight Trump Campaign is they’re currently gathering funds to reach their $5 million goal and hoping to capitalize on rumors that a tape exists of Mr Trump using the “n-word” during his 11-years with the reality television show.
A former producer on the Mark Burnett–produced television show is claiming that there is at least some truth to the rumor. “As a producer on seasons 1 & 2 of [The Apprentice] I assure you: when it comes to the [Trump Tapes] there are far worse. #JustTheBeginning,” Bill Pruitt tweeted on Saturday.
The fundraiser comes after The Washington Post published a conversation recorded in 2005 between Mr Trump and former Access Hollywood host Billy Bush.
Mr Trump can be heard saying that he makes advances and gropes women without permission because of his celebrity while Mr Bush effectively giggles and encourages him on.
“Someone out there is likely in possession of a piece of evidence that could be used to substantiate what many folks have always believed; that the current nominee for President of the United States is not a moral leader for us all to look to over the next four years,” the GoFundMe page says.
"Any unused funds (or if no one comes forward) will be donated to a reputable organization that supports freedom of the press and journalistic integrity."
