Donald Trump claims Obamacare covers 'very few people’ despite covering 21 million
This isn't the first time the President made the false claim

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.President Trump on Monday repeated his false claim that his predecessor’s health care law covers “very few people.” However, the Affordable Care Act covers more than 21 million Americans.
He made the remarks during a White House “listening session” where he railed against the media and its coverage of Obamacare while promising that the Republican alternative will save the American people from it’s supposed shortcomings.
“So the press is making it look so wonderful. So that if we end it, everyone’s going to say, oh remember how great Obamacare used to be? Remember how wonderful it used to be,” he said in a meeting people who said they’ve seen their coverage reduced under the Affordable Care Act. “It was so great; it’s a little bit like President Obama. When he left, people liked him, when he was here people didn’t like him so much.”
"The press is making Obamacare look so good,” he continued. “It covers very few people and it’s imploded.”
This isn’t first time President Trump made the false claim. In February, he repeated the statement at the Conservative Political Action Conference, word for word. "Obamacare covers very few people," he told his crowd of supporters.
In reality, more than 20 million Americans are covered by the two components of Obamacare: expanded Medicaid and subsidized private health insurance.
