President accuses senator of using 'fake tears'

New York Senator Chuck Schumer nearly broke down in tears as he promised to "claw, scrap and fight" to overturn Donald Trump's executive order temporarily suspending all immigration from several Muslim majority countries.

"This executive order was mean-spirited and un-American," the senator said, fighting back tears.

Giving a press conference on Sunday alongside refugees from Syria and Iraq whose families had been affected, he said: "It was implemented in a way that created chaos and confusion across the country and it will only serve to embolden and inspire those around the globe who will do us harm."

Mr Schumer added: "As your senator from New York, I will claw, scrap, and fight with very fibre of my being until these orders are overturned."

The President's executive order temporarily suspended immigration from several Muslim majority countries, halts refugee admissions for four months and indefinitely halts the processing of Syrian refugees in particular.

On Friday, Mr Schumer tweeted to say "Tears are running down the cheeks of the Statue of Liberty" over the ban.

Mr Trump then mocked Mr Schumer on Monday, calling his tears "fake".

"I noticed Chuck Schumer yesterday with fake tears," Mr Trump said, speaking before a meeting with small business leaders at the White House.

"I'm going to ask him who was his acting coach. Because I know him very well, I don't see him as a crier.

"If he is, he's a different man. There's about a five per cent chance that was real, but I think they were fake tears."

The President alo took to Twitter to problems at airports on a Delta computer outrage and "the tears of Senator Schumer".

Mr Trump claimed only a few people were hit by issues after the ban on Muslims travelling to the US went into place, tweeting to say "all is going well with very few problems".

In a series of tweets, he wrote: "Only 109 people out of 325,000 were detained and held for questioning. Big problems at airports were caused by Delta computer outage, protesters and the tears of Senator Schumer. Secretary Kelly said that all is going well with very few problems. MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!"
