A Californian university professor believed to be the leader of a motorcycle gang has gone on the run after being charged with operating a drug ring.

Stephen Kinzey, 43, a professor of kinesiology at California State University, is thought to lead a chapter of the "Devils Diciples" biker gang and is wanted by authorities for supplying methamphetamine to dealers.

A six-month investigation culminated yesterday when police raided his home and discovered a pound of methamphetamine, unregistered firearms and biker paraphernalia.

Mr Kinzey's 33-year-old live-in partner was arrested in the raid.

"It's alarming to me – I have kids in college – to have an associate professor who is a member of Devils Diciples dealing methamphetamine," Sheriff Rod Hoops, who is leading the hunt for Mr Kinzey.

The professor has taught at California State University in San Bernardino for 10 years.

"If the allegations are indeed true, this is beyond disappointing," university president Albert Karnig said in a statement.
