Flour recall: Warning issued over 12,000 cases of Pillsbury after possible salmonella contamination

Popular grocery chains issue warnings to consumers amid salmonella fears

The US Department of Agriculture has announced a recall for thousands of Pillsbury Unbleached All Purpose Flour products, citing a possible salmonella contamination.

The voluntary recall was issued by Hometown Food Company and impacts a total of 12,185 cases of flour.

The impacted flour was distributed by popular grocery chains like Publix and Winn-Dixie.

Publix warned the public about the recall in a statement reading, “These products should be thrown away of returned to the place of purchase for a refund.”

Winn-Dixie also encouraged customers to discard their flour if it had been recalled, though it noted in a statement there had not yet been any cited illnesses.

The recall includes Pillsbury lot codes 8 292 and 8 293 with “best if used by” dates of 19 April 2020 and 20 April, 2020 respectively.

The announcement marks the second nationwide flour recall amid fears of salmonella.

General Mills was forced to recall about 10,000 unbleached flour products in January.

Food is the leading source of infections from salmonella, which reportedly causes nearly 450 deaths a year in the US, according to the US Centres for Disease Control.
