A toddler has drowned and been pronounced dead at the same hospital and on the same day that her mother gave birth to her little brother.

Jaylynn Adamson, an 18-month-old girl, was staying with relatives while her mother was in hospital when she was discovered in a garden pond at 9.22am on Friday in Marion County, Ohio.

Paramedics who were first to the scene attempted CPR on the little girl, before she was rushed to Marion General Hospital, where her mother was in labour at the time.

Marion County’s coroner Dr Marc Comianos told the local Marion Star that Jaylynn was pronounced dead at 10am in the emergency room at the hospital, where her mother later gave birth at about 4pm.

“It appears to be an accidental drowning, but we're still investigating,” said Lt Jason Dutton from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. “The squad was called and CPR was performed, and she was transported to Marion General Hospital. They were working on her as they transported her.”

According to the Columbus Dispatch, officials at the hospital declined to comment on who was staying with Jaylynn while her mother was in hospital. It reported that the home where the incident occurred was owned by her maternal grandparents.

David Adamson, an uncle of the children’s father, told the newspaper the mother had given birth to a boy and said: “Everybody’s kind of wrapped up in the death and the birth.”

Dr Comianos said Jaylynn’s body had been taken for autopsy at the Franklin County Morgue, with preliminary results not expected until Monday.
