More than 20 states went to the polls on Super Tuesday in the most significant day so far in the race to the White House. Republican John McCain was seen as the day's winner, Mitt Romney as its loser and Mike Huckabee as the surprise performer.

In the Democratic contest, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama split the successes as the former First Lady won California and Massachusetts but the Illinois senator took more states.

Here is a summary of the results so far in each state:

The number of delegates going to each candidate will not be known until later, but the numbers available on Super Tuesday are shown for both the Democrats (D) and Republicans (R). "W" applies to the Republican contest only and denotes a state where the Republican winner takes all of that state's delegates.

* Alabama primary - D: 52; R: 45.

Barack Obama won with 56% of the vote to Hillary Clinton's 42% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

Mike Huckabee won with 41% of the vote, followed by John McCain with 37% and Mitt Romney with 18% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

* Alaska caucuses - D: 13; R: 26.

Mr Obama won with 75% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 25% (with 98% of precincts reporting).

Mr Romney won with 45% of the vote, followed by Mr Huckabee with 22% and Ron Paul and Mr McCain, both with 16% (with 90% of precincts reporting).

* Arizona primary - D: 56; R: 53. W.

Mrs Clinton won with 51% of the vote to Mr Obama's 42% (with 81% of precincts reporting).

Mr McCain won with 47% of the vote to Mr Romney's 34% (with 81% of precincts reporting).

* Arkansas primary - D: 35; R: 31.

Mrs Clinton won with 69% of the vote to Mr Obama's 27% (with 86% of precincts reporting).

Mr Huckabee won with 61% of the vote followed by Mr McCain with 20% and Mr Romney with 13% (with 86% of precincts reporting).

* California primary - D: 370; R: 170.

Mrs Clinton won with 53% of the vote to Mr Obama's 38% (with 42% of precincts reporting).

Mr McCain won with 43% of the vote followed by Mr Romney with 29% and Mr Huckabee with 12% (with 42% of precincts reporting).

* Colorado caucuses - D: 55; R: 43.

Mr Obama won with 67% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 32% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

Mr Romney won with 60% of the vote, followed by Mr McCain with 19% and Mr Huckabee with 13% (with 92% reporting).

* Connecticut primary - D: 48; R: 27. W.

Mr Obama won with 51% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 47% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

Mr McCain won with 52% of the vote followed by Mr Romney with 33% and Mr Huckabee with 7% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

* Delaware primary - D: 15; R: 18. W.

Mr Obama won with 53% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 43% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

Mr McCain won with 45% of the vote followed by Mr Romney with 33% and Mr Huckabee with 15% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

* Georgia primary - D: 87; R: 72. W.

Mr Obama won with 67% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 31% (with 98% of precincts reporting).

Mr Huckabee won with 34% of the vote followed by Mr McCain with 32% and Mr Romney with 30% (with 98% of precincts reporting).

* Idaho caucuses - D: 18.

Mr Obama won with 79% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 17% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

* Illinois primary - D: 153; R: 57.

Mr Obama won with 65% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 33% (with 97% of precincts reporting).

Mr McCain won with 47% of the vote followed by Mr Romney with 29% and Mr Huckabee with 17% (with 97% of precincts reporting).

* Kansas caucuses - D: 32.

Mr Obama won with 74% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 26% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

* Massachusetts primary - D: 93; R: 40.

Mrs Clinton won with 56% of the vote to Mr Obama's 41% (with 96% of precincts reporting).

Mr Romney won with 51% of the vote, followed by Mr McCain with 41% and Mr Huckabee with 4% (with 96% of precincts reporting).

* Minnesota caucuses - D: 72; R: 38.

Mr Obama won with 67% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 32% (with 81% of precincts reporting).

Mr Romney won with 42% of the vote, followed by Mr McCain with 22% and Mr Huckabee with 20% (with 82% of precincts reporting).

* Missouri primary - D: 72; R: 58. W.

Mr Obama won with 49% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 48% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

Mr McCain won with 33% of the vote, followed by Mr Huckabee with 32% and Mr Romney with 29% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

* Montana caucuses - R: 25. W.

Mr Romney won with 38% of the votes, followed by Mr Paul with 25%, Mr McCain with 22% and Mr Huckabee with 15% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

* New Jersey primary - D: 107; R: 52. W.

Mrs Clinton won with 54% of the vote to Mr Obama's 44% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

Mr McCain won with 55% of the vote, followed by Mr Romney with 28% and Mr Huckabee with 8% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

* New Mexico primary - D: 26.

Only 54% of the Democratic precincts have reported their results so far, but the race remains too close to call.

* New York primary - D: 232; R: 101. W

Mrs Clinton won with 57% of the vote to Mr Obama's 40% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

Mr McCain won with 51% of the vote, followed by Mr Romney with 28% and Mr Huckabee with 11% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

* North Dakota caucuses - D: 13; R: 23.

Mr Obama won with 61% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 37% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

Mr Romney won with 36% of the vote, followed by Mr McCain with 23%, Mr Paul with 21% and Mr Huckabee with 20% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

* Oklahoma primary - D: 38; R: 38.

Mrs Clinton won with 55% of the vote to Mr Obama's 31% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

Mr McCain won with 37% of the vote, followed by Mr Huckabee with 33% and Mr Romney with 25% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

* Tennessee primary - D: 68; R: 52.

Mrs Clinton won with 54% of the vote to Mr Obama's 41% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

Mr Huckabee won with 34% of the vote, followed by Mr McCain with 32% and Mr Romney with 24% (with 100% of precincts reporting).

* Utah primary - D: 23; R: 36. W.

Mr Obama won with 57% of the vote to Mrs Clinton's 39% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

Mr Romney won with 90% of the vote, followed by Mr McCain with 5%, Mr Paul with 3% and Mr Huckabee with 2% (with 99% of precincts reporting).

* West Virginia caucuses - R: 18. W.

Mr Huckabee won with 52% of the vote, followed by Mr Romney with 47% and Mr McCain with 1% (with 100% of precincts reporting).
