During the incident in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, the driver of a Ford Taurus allegedly almost hit the family in their Chevrolet Suburban on Cascade Avenue, a passenger told AJC news.
Filled with road rage, the gunman followed family along the motorway, and onto a strip mall on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.
The passenger, who asked not to be identified, told NBC affiliated local broadcaster 11 Alive that the gunman "pulled a gun out and started [shooting]."
As the man opened fire, Noah jumped from the passenger window in front of the bullet, saving the children and their mother, the passenger added.
The gunman’s bullet smashed the car’s windows, leaving shattered glass strewn inside the SUV and on the ground.
"The dog took the bullet for the kids so the kids would be safe," an eye witness said.
CCTV footage from the scene shows Noah running past the shops after the shooting, before hiding behind a building where he died.
"They were fired upon and their family was terrorised," said Atlanta Police Sgt.Gregory Lyon. "They survived that only to find that their pet is now gone. It's sad for the whole family, especially the day after Thanksgiving.“
Police officers are now searching for the driver of a blue-grey Taurus believed to be involved in the attack.
