Memphis shooting: Four injured with one in critical condition after Purple Haze nightclub attack

Four people have been shot and injured after a gunman opened fire in a Memphis nightclub.

Police said the injured were taken to hospital, one of them in a critical condition, after shots were fired at the Purple Haze nightclub at around 3am.

“3:25 am officers responded to a shooting @ The Purple Haze nightclub @ 140 George W. Lee. 4 victims were shot a xported to the hospital. 1 victim is in critical condition, 3 victims are in non-critical,” the Memphis police department tweeted.

It said no arrests had been made and that the situation was an ongoing investigation. One of the injured was reportedly a security guard at the club.

The Commercial Appeal newspaper said this was not the first time the Tennessee nightclub had made the headline for the wrong reasons. In April, 41-year-old peace campaigner Toshia “Choosey Parker” Addison was fatally shot close the venue.

Meanwhile, in December 2017, a man was critically injured during an early morning shooting at the club on Christmas Day.

On Monday morning, the club, which is located close to the city’s famous Beale Street, known for its live music and entertainment, said it was fully cooperating with police.

“We offer our deepest sympathies and prayers for quick healing to those that were injured, including one of our very own security officers, in the altercation that happened at Purple Haze Nightclub early this morning,” it said in a statement.

“While measures were in place to detect the possession of firearms as patrons enter the club we are unsure at this time how those that discharged firearms were able to do so despite our strict security procedures.”

It added: “As the safety and security of our guests and employees are our utmost concern we are temporarily closing for two weeks to review operations.”
