From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Melania Trump's Twitter account favourited a tweet that showed the viral image of her quickly dropping a smile at her husband's inauguration as soon as the new President turned away.

The verified @MELANIATRUMP account briefly liked a tweet featuring the now-infamous image which read: "Seems the only #Wall @realDonaldTrump's built is the one between him and @FLOTUS #Melania #trump".

It was only the second tweet the First Lady's currently-inactive personal account had liked, though it removed it less than an hour afterwards on Tuesday.

Its last tweet was on 8 November last year, the day of the US presidential election, and featured an image of a "Vote #TrumpPence16" badge. Its other "liked" tweet was its own first message, a simple "Hello Twitter!" in 2012.

Ms Trump has a separate professional account—@FLOTUS—run by her office that promotes her activities as First Lady.

While President Trump has his own official @POTUS Twitter account, as favoured by his predecessor Barack Obama, he prefers to use his personal @realDonaldTrump profile to broadcast his thoughts to the world.
