The bizarre case of a Utah woman missing for two years took a horrific turn when a powerful house explosion killed her husband and his two young sons.
The boys had just arrived at Josh Powell's house for a visit that was supposed to be supervised by a social worker. The police believe Mr Powell blew the house up on purpose – he had sent emails to the authorities which seemed to confirm he had planned the blast.
He was under investigation in the disappearance of his 28-year-old wife, Susan, from their home in West Valley City in December 2009.
The children, five and seven, had been living with Susan Powell's parents since Josh Powell's father, Steven, was arrested on child porn and voyeurism charges last autumn. On Wednesday, Josh Powell lost an attempt to regain custody.
