Your support makes all the difference.A reporter for American sports broadcaster ESPN has been suspended by the network for one week after a video was released showing her verbally abusing a towing attendant for being “overweight” and not going to university.
Washington-based sports reporter Britt McHenry was filmed on the security camera of the Advanced Towing parking lot in Arlington, Virginia last week making a number of disparaging comments towards the attendant in the minute-long clip.
In the footage, McHenry can be heard mocking the attendant for not having a degree and working in a “scumbag place” and “living in a trailer”.
The parking attendant is heard responding to McHenry’s abuse by saying, “Well, let’s get you out of here quickly.”
To which McHenry replies: “Yep, that's all you care about - taking people's money…with no education, no skill set. Just wanted to clarify that.”
Following the outburst, McHenry took to Twitter to voice her frustrations at Advanced Towing, calling the company “corrupt”.
Advanced Towing is yet to comment on the video or identify the attendant.
Speaking to US sports website the Big Lead after the incident, an ESPN spokesman said they were “aware of a recent exchange between Britt McHenry and a towing company employee” and are “reviewing the matter.”
The network subsequently decided to suspend McHenry for a week.
McHenry hit Twitter to publicly apologise for the outburst, writing that she allowed her emotions to get the better of her.
She wrote: “In an intense and stressful moment, I allowed my emotions to get the best of me and said some insulting and regrettable things. As frustrated as I was, I should always choose to be respectful and take the high road. I am so sorry for my actions and will learn from this mistake.”
