One-year-old shot dead at New York cook-out

At least 23 have been shot in NYC since Saturday, including three children

A one-year-old boy was shot and killed Sunday while attending a cookout in a Brooklyn, New York park.

The shooting occurred on Sunday in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood. The child, Davell Gardner Jr, and three men were injured in the attack.

According to the New York Post, the child was initially expected to live, but eventually succumbed to his injuries.

The child and the men were at the barbecue when a dark SUV with at least three individuals inside drove up to the gathering. The men exited the vehicle and began shooting at attendees.

Davell was in his stroller when he was shot in the stomach, according to the police.

The other men who were shot were hit in the groin, the leg and the ankle.

The men are expected to survive.

Mayor Bill de Blasio discussed the shooting during a press briefing on Monday and held a moment of silence for the child.

"We've got to take resolve out of every situation like this. We can never give up," Mr de Blasio said. "We can never give up on our children, we can never give up on our families, we can never give up on our neighbourhoods - no matter how tough it seems."

The investigation is on-going. As of Monday, authorities have made no arrests.

The shooting was one of many in New York City over the weekend. At least 23 people have been shot there since midday Saturday.

Two boys, age 12 and 15, were wounded in separate shootings over the weekend. The 12-year-old was shot in the lag and the 15-year-old was shot in the wrist. The shootings were not connected.
