From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A 7-year-old girl who was left alone with her 6-year-old sister died in a drowning accident in Colorado last week.

The young girl’s body was found by a man who called 911 after hearing screaming in the pool area of her family’s Arapahoe County residence on August 11.

Eve Gbeugre, the girl’s 27-year-old mother, was originally held by on a $50,000 bond but the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office said no charges would be filed and she would soon be released from custody.

Gbeugre told investigators that she needed a break from her misbehaving girls and left both of her children at home for more than one hour to go shopping at Wal-Mart.

Julie Brooks, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, told KDVR that investigators do not believe family members were home when the child drowned.

"Based on information made known to the District Attorney’s Office, and in consultation with the Arapahoe County Sheriff, the District Attorney has determined that filing criminal charges against Eve Gbeugre would not be appropriate at this time, and therefore will not be filing criminal charges resulting from this arrest, and the District Attorney requests that Eve Gbeugre be released from custody," the DA's office said in a statement.

Officials said the investigation will continue and charges may be filed against other parties in the future.
