John Burnside was born in Dunfermline in 1955 and at the age of 11 moved to England. His previous collections include The Hoop (Carcanet, 1988) and Common Knowledge (Secker & Warburg, 1991). This poem is from his third collection Feast Days (Secker & Warburg, 1992) and now appears in a new anthology, Dream State: The New Scottish Poets, edited by Daniel O'Rourke and published by Polygon at pounds 10.95.
