The four killed in a fatal light air-craft crash in Somerset are from the same family, police have said.

The family members who died in the deadly accident on Saturday were a 56-year-old man, a 55-year-old woman, a 23-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man.

Although formal identification has not yet taken place, they are believed to be a couple and their two grown-up children, who were all pronounced dead the scene.

Theye were killed when a six-seater aircraft crashed into a field near to the village of Churchinford as it was travelling from Surrey to Dunkeswell Aerodrome in east Devon.

The cause of the crash is as yet unknown. The first images that emerged showed the cockpit and tail completely snapped off.

Supt Richard Corrigan said: “We have a specially trained family liaison officer supporting the affected family and they’re being kept fully updated on our progress.

“Our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.

“A joint investigation is under way with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

“The focus of the activity will be investigative enquiries and then recovery of the aircraft."

The aircraft came down just seven miles from its destination.

Churchinford is located within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, south of Taunton.
