Jeremy Corbyn attacks Theresa May over NHS staff shortages, cuts and privatisation

Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn have clashed over the NHS during their weekly joust at Prime Minister's Questions.

The Labour leader demanded increased investment and a reversal of the use of private companies in the health system, claiming Tory policies mean it is "jackpot time for privateers". Ms May accused Labour of "scaremongering" about privatisation and funding cuts, and said every Conservative government has protected the NHS.

Meanwhile, the row over post-Brexit customs rules threatened to bubble over when HMRC chief Jon Thomson said the Brexiteers' preferred option could cost business £20bn.

Brussels also rejected Ms May's new plan to solve the customs row amid growing pressure from Eurosceptics over Ms May's favoured "customs partnership" proposal, which they fear could keep Britain too closely tied to the EU after Brexit.

Boris Johnson is on a five-day trip to Latin America, where he can't resist chipping in on Brexit.

He told Bloomberg TV: "The Prime Minister is the custodian of the plan, which is to come out of the customs union, out of the single market and to get on with it, to get on with that project with all convenient speed, and that is what we are going to do.

"I think it's important for people to have a sense of when it's going to happen and to be able to do it as fast as is reasonably possible."

Spelling out a detailed list of requirements from any deal, Mr Johnson added: "The Prime Minister has made it absolutely clear that we are coming out of the customs union and we're coming out of the single market and what is entailed by those promises is very precise.

"It means we take back control of our tariff schedules, we set our own tariffs, we run our own commercial policy.

"It means we are able to do things differently if we choose, when it comes to our regulatory framework. That's very, very important. Otherwise, you're not taking control of your laws, you're not taking back control of your borders."

Attorney General Jeremy Wright is making a rare public speech today, where he said the Government believes the most serious cyber attacks should be treated as if they were armed attacks on Britain.

He said: "The UK considers that it is clear that cyber operations that result in or present an imminent threat of death and destruction on an equivalent scale to an armed attack will give rise to an inherent right to take action in self defence.

"If a hostile state interferes with the operation of one of our nuclear reactors, resulting in the widespread loss of life, the fact that the act is carried out by way of a cyber operation does not prevent it from being viewed as an unlawful use of force or an armed attack against us.

"If it would be a breach of international law to bomb an air traffic control tower with the effect of downing civilian aircraft, then it will be a breach of international law to use a cyber operation to disable air traffic control systems which result in the same ultimately lethal effects.

"Acts like the targeting of essential medical services are no less prohibited interventions or even armed attacks when they are committed by cyber means."

Brexit minister Suella Braverman has made news during her committee appearance this morning, by admitting that Britain will be legally bound to pay its £39bn Brexit ‘divorce bill’ before the details of a future EU trade deal are agreed.

MPs will be asked to authorise the payment when they vote on the withdrawal deal in the autumn, Ms Braverman said – but there will be no trade treaty until after the UK leaves the EU next year.

A little awkward for the minister (who recently changed her last name to Braverman after getting married).

A minute's silence will be held on June 3 to mark a year since the London Bridge and Borough Market terrorist atrocity.

Eight people were killed as a van ploughed into people on the bridge before the three attackers carried out a knife rampage in Borough Market, an area full of bars and restaurants where people were enjoying a Saturday night out.

The perpetrators - Khuram Butt, 27, Rachid Redouane, 30, and Youssef Zaghba, 22 - were shot dead by police.

The victims of the attack were Christine Archibald, 30, Xavier Thomas, 45, Alexandre Pigeard, 26, Sara Zelenak, 21, Kirsty Boden, 28, Sebastien Belanger, 36, James McMullan, 32, and Ignacio Echeverria, 39.

A Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport spokesman said: "A minute's silence will be held on Sunday June 3 2018 at 4.30pm in remembrance of those who lost their lives and all others that were affected by the London Bridge and Borough Market attack, one year ago.

"The silence will be marked in UK government buildings and other organisations may follow suit."

Sajid Javid is making a major speech to the Police Federation now.

He jokes that Theresa May told him this conference has the toughest crowd of any speech in the political calendar. Ms May famously delivered a speech condemning officers for showing 'contempt for the public' when she was Home Secretary.
