From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A senior Ukip official has said the party is “proud” to represent people regardless of what they do in their private lives, after it was revealed that the man working under him was a veteran porn star.

Ukip candidate John Langley, who is running to represent the party in the ward of Stockwood in Bristol, does not include details of his other job as adult actor Johnny Rockard in any of his campaign material.

But speaking to BBC News in Bristol, he said he was “happy to confirm” reports he had appeared in, produced and promoted a range of porn films.

Mr Langley said he had never tried to hide what he did for a living, and added that “people like Ukip because we’re not just the beige, bland, career, boring politicians that they normally see”.

As well as running for the party in the local elections, Mr Langley is the vice chairman of Ukip’s Bristol branch.

And the man who he works under, Ukip’s prospective MP for Bristol South and Bristol chair Steve Wood, confirmed the party had been aware of Mr Langley’s other job as director of Johnny Rockard Global Media.

“We fully investigated this when John joined the party and found that nothing he was doing was illegal,” Mr Wood told The Independent.

The PPC said that not judging people for what they do in private was “part of the Ukip message” and that “no other party” would take a candidate like Mr Langley.

He also criticised other parties for coming out “all high and mighty” after Mr Langley’s past emerged, adding: “At least he’s not a paedophile.”

He said: “I don’t agree with certain sections of what people do… but who am I turn round judge another man or woman, who am I to judge a gay couple, who am I to judge anybody?”

Mr Wood said he was “proud to have John on board”, adding: “He has done an awful lot to do with mental health, and I am proud for Ukip to stand up with him and say good on you for helping others who can’t help themselves.

“Whatever he decides to do behind closed doors, it’s not really my place to criticise him.”
