After days of speculation, Conservative MP Anna Soubry has revealed where George Osborne disappeared to following the EU referendum result.

The Chancellor has lain low since it was revealed that the Remain team he had been leading had failed to gain majority backing in the referendum, with some speculating he could be licking his wounds or reconsidering his position in Government.

Speaking on a special edition of BBC Question Time to analyse the Brexit result this evening, leading Remain politician and Minister of State for Small Business' Anna Soubry defended Mr Osborne, telling the audience: "We are in immediate economic shock. That's why I can tell you where the Chancellor is- the Chancellor is sitting, working out, making the phone calls and putting the stability back in."

However, Ms Soubry's claims were met with bemusement from the audience, who seemed less than convinced by her suggestion. Titters and laughter from the crowd soon drowned out her voice.

Following the announcement of the Brexit result, the value of the sterling nose-dived, plummetting to its lowest level for more than thirty years.

On the same day, David Cameron announced his intention to resign as Prime Minister by October, prompting speculation Mr Osborne may also have to reconsider his position as Chancellor .

There has been growing criticism of politicians involved in both sides of the referendum over their perceived lack of leadership following the results.

Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: "PM and Chancellor who proposed EU referendum are in hiding, those who campaigned forleave have no plan and the opposition is imploding. Disgraceful."
