A person has died after being hit by a tram in West Bromwich, police have said.

Police say the person was pronounced dead at the scene after they were called to the Trinity Way stop just before 5am on Saturday morning.

Medics from West Midlands Ambulance Service responded to reports of the incident from the West Midlands town, however they were unable to save the person.

The body has been removed from the scene, however disruption is expected to continue in the afternoon, reports BirminghamLive.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to Trinity Way tram stop in West Bromwich at 4.55am this morning, to reports that a person had been struck by a tram.

"We attended alongside colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are now working to locate the person’s next of kin and establish how they came to be on the tram tracks.’

The force is yet to release any further details on the identity of the deceased person, including whether they are a man or a woman.

The incident caused disruption on the Midland Metro line, which operates between the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

Trams traveling east were reportedly only going as far as West Bromwich Central, which is one stop before Trinity Way.

Midland Metro said on Twitter the service was only operating between Wolverhampton and West Bromwich, with tickets valid on National Express buses and West Midlands trains.
