A man has been arrested in London after trying to enter the Palace of Westminster, police have said.

MPs gathered inside for a crucial vote in the House of Commons, shortly before the man was arrested at around 7.20pm on Tuesday on suspicion of trespassing on a protected site.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said that the man was detained after trying to enter the building through Parliament's Carriage Gates.

The incident is not thought to be terror related and no officers were injured.

The man has been taken to a police station.
