The National Trust is to acquire 346 acres of parkland surrounding an 18th century, Grade I-listed house where the remake of the television series, The Forsythe Saga, was filmed.

The trust will open up the area around Nostell Priory, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, for the first time next summer with the help of a £4.2m award from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The award will also be used to buy paintings, furniture and books from the Winn family collection, some of which have never been on public display

But much of the money will be dedicated to restoring the parkland and its buildings.

This will include the restoration of the pyramid-shaped Obelisk lodge and boat house. Trees will be planted to recreate a mid-19th century landscape.

The house, owned by the National Trust, was built in 1733 for the Winn family.
