A section of the M1 has been closed after a serious accident in which a car driver was killed.

The man died when his car was in collision with a lorry at about 4.15am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 16 and 17 in Northamptonshire.

This stretch of the motorway has been closed and is not expected to reopen until 10.45am. Diversions are in place and the Highways Agency has advised drivers to allow extra time for their journeys.

Northamptonshire Police said anyone with information or who witnessed the crash is asked to call the drivewatch hotline on 0800 174615.
