Huge fire engulfs Holyhead Marina months after storm damage

Firefighters have been battling a huge blaze at Holyhead Marina just months after it was battered by Storm Emma.

Images on social media show a building - believed to be an industrial workshop - engulfed by flames, while witnesses reported hearing an "explosion".

Large plumes of smoke were visible for miles around and nearby residents were warned to keep their doors and windows closed.

Ynys Mon MP Albert Owen said the area had been evacuated "as a precaution", and tweeted that there were "no reported injuries".

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it had been called to the blaze at about 9.10pm on Thursday and had sent four crews to the incident.

The fire was not believed to be affecting the port.

RNLI Holyhead, whose base is nearby, described the incident as "devastating".

Sharing several pictures from the scene, they tweeted: "Devastating scenes here in Holyhead. Our ILB has been taken to safety but this is awful to see. Please stay safe everyone."

In March, Storm Emma damaged a large number of vessels berthed in the marina and caused millions of pounds worth of damage.
