Aberdeen school stabbing: Tributes paid to 16-year-old Bailey Gwynne

Friends and fellow pupils expressed their shock and grief on social media

Tributes have been paid to a 16-year-old male pupil who died after being stabbed at the Cults Academy school in Aberdeen.

The boy, named locally as fifth year student Bailey Gwynne, was taken to Royal Aberdeen Hospital with serious injuries shortly after emergency services arrived at the school on Tuesday lunchtime.

It is understood he died in hospital a short time later.

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon was one of the first to offer her condolences, writing on Twitter: "All my thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man who has tragically died at Cults Academy today."

Callum McCaig, the SNP MP for the area and former Cults Academy pupil, also expressed his sadness at Gwynne's death online, writing: "Desperately sad news from Cults Academy today. My thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man at this very difficult time."

Police detained another 16-year-old boy, also a pupil at the school, after they arrived on the scene. He is said to be helping police with their inquiries.

Head teacher Anna Muirhead said the victim was a "gentle and caring" boy, and added the whole school was "totally devastated" by the day's events.

Gail Gorman, director of education and children's services at Aberdeen City Council, told reporters the school would be closed for the next two days to help with the police investigation.

Other pupils from the school and young people from the surrounding area were shocked and saddened by the news, with many sharing their sympathies on social media.

One girl wrote: "No child anywhere should go to school and not come back. RIP Bailey."

Another said: "Far too young to die. Horrible thing to be near. Not a nice day at all."
