Woman dragged along road by moped thieves

Footage has emerged of a woman being dragged down a south London street by thieves riding a moped, after they had unsuccessfully attempted to rob her.

The woman was walking alone down Hassocks Road in Streatham last month when the attack happened.

Merton Police said a pair of riders on a moped drove past the woman, before circling back and attempting to steal her purse by grabbing her bag.

The woman refused to let go of her bag and was dragged along the road by the moped, suffering injuries as a result of the attack, police said.

The force has have released footage of her being dragged down the street in the hope that witnesses to the 15 May attack will come forward.

Several attacks and robberies perpetrated by people on mopeds have been reported across the city in recent months.

In May a group of eight people on mopeds broke a tourist’s leg in Park Lane in an attempt to steal his watch. Another moped gang attack was also reportedly operating in south London.

The Evening Standard reported the gang were seen tearing down the streets of Wandsworth and Wimbledon while spraying restaurant diners and commuters with a fire extinguisher.

A week ago a heavily pregnant woman in Hackney was targeted by a thief on a motorbike, who tried to steal her phone as she walked home down a residential street, the Hackney Gazette reported.
