UK police to patrol in Magaluf and Ibiza as part of trial project aimed at reminding British holidaymakers to 'respect local laws'
Officers from France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Morocco have previously patrolled resorts in Spain
Police from the UK are to patrol the streets of Magaluf and Ibiza, two Spanish holiday destinations with a reputation for binge drinking, casual sex and large numbers of young British tourists.
As part of a trial project, two officers in their West Midlands Police uniforms will spend a week in Magaluf on Majorca and then travel to San Antonio on Ibiza for another week, The Guardian reported.
The British ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, said: “The presence of UK police officers will help to remind British holidaymakers of the importance of respecting local laws and customs, ensuring that everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday, free from trouble and crime.”
Police officers from France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Morocco have previously patrolled resorts in Spain.
Andy Marsh, of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, said: “This trial deployment of officers to work alongside the Guardia Civil is a further step in developing these strong links and builds on the success that Spanish colleagues have seen when working with colleagues from other countries in a similar way.
“Their presence will offer reassurance to locals and UK citizens in areas that significantly increase in population during the busy summer holiday season and provide support to victims of crime during what can be a traumatic experience, especially when away from home.”
