Anglesey beach: Two men found dead days after discovery of a human foot

Detectives say deaths 'unexplained' but thought to be linked to remains found near Bangor earlier this week

The bodies of two men have been found on a beach in Anglesey, North Wales Police have said.

Detectives said the deaths were “being treated as unexplained” but were thought to be linked to the discovery of a human foot near Bangor earlier this week.

The men were found dead near the village of Malltraeth on the Welsh island at about 11.45am on Friday.

Detective Inspector Gerwyn Thomas said: “Police are working with the Coastguards to recover the bodies of two men. Their deaths are currently being treated as unexplained as we try to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Formal identification is yet to take place and HM Coroner for North West Wales has been informed.”

He added: “Sadly we believe this incident may be linked to the discovery of the human foot on Felinheli beach near Bangor earlier this week.”

A post-mortem examination earlier this week established the foot belonged to a man of unknown age. Police said the right foot was believed to have been in the water “no longer than seven days” and showed no signs of a suspicious death.

Officers have been checking against the national database of missing people as they work to identify the remains.

Mr Thomas said on Thursday: “Our focus remains on identifying the remains and passing the very sad news onto a family and friends. DNA has been obtained and we will now prioritise a check on the national database and of missing people, initially locally but if needs be wider still.

“As a matter of courtesy we have spoken with the families of people who are missing locally to ensure them we are doing all we can to reunite the remains with the respective family as quickly and as sensitively as possible.”
