The bodies of a man and a woman were found by the side of a road yesterday after they were struck and killed by a car in a hit-and-run incident.

Police said the pair were believed to have been left lying in the dark after the collision in Washington, Tyne and Wear, shortly after midnight.

The victims had been walking beside a busy dual carriageway close to a junction with another road when they were struck by the car.

The vehicle involved was traced yesterday morning and the driver was arrested.

A 22-year-old woman was released on police bail pending further inquiries, Northumbria, police said.

She will attend a police station next month to hear if she will face charges.

The bodies were discovered shortly after the collision by a taxi driver as he was passing the scene on the A1231, towards Sunderland.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "The taxi driver thought they were unconscious. It was only when he got closer to them he realised that was not the case. They had both been struck by a car which was no longer at the scene. That car and driver have been traced."

Efforts continued across the region to identify the victims, thought to be in their 20s.
