Police hunt two men as teenager dies after double shooting in London

Shooting occurred within five hours of fatal stabbing in south-west London

Two men are being hunted by police after a teenager was shot dead while sitting in a car in Clapton, east London.

The victim has been named as Joseph Burke-Monerville, 19, who was studying forensic science at London Metropolitan University. Police said he was from the Islington area and that nobody in the car had links to gangs.

The shooting was the second fatal attack in London within in five hours, after a 16-year-old was stabbed to death in the stairwell of a tower block after a party in Wandsworth, south-west London.

Witnesses reported seeing two men with bandanas over their faces walk into Hindrey Road, Clapton, before three shots were fired – leaving Mr Burke-Monerville fatally wounded and his 22-year-old companion injured. A third person in the car, aged 19, escaped unharmed. Friends of the student left tributes last night on his Facebook page. Timothy Timi-Kehinde Gbadeyan, a close friend, wrote: “I always hear about gun crimes, never thought my brother will ever be a victim.”

Detectives from the Trident gang crime unit said they were hunting for two men seen running from the area after the shooting, at about 8.20pm on Saturday, towards the nearby Pembury estate.
