The case accusing Shrien Dewani of plotting to murder his wife Anni was thrown out at a court in Cape Town today.

Judge Jeanette Traverso announced her decision this morning at around 10:45 GMT stating that the prosecution's case was "weak" and that there was "no evidence" which could reasonably seal a conviction.

In 2010, it was alleged that Mr Dewani organised hitmen to kill his 28-year-old wife Anni as the couple honeymooned in South Africa.

Dewani has always maintained his innocence and his defence lawyers claim that the prosecution case was inconsistent and weak.

Anni Dewani was killed on 13 November 2010 while the two were on holiday in South Africa.

While the pair drove through Gugulethu township just outside of Cape Town, their vehicle was hijacked by two gunmen.

According to Shrien Dewani, he was let go while the men drove off with his wife.

Anni Dewani was found dead the next day.

The prosecution alleged that the hijacking and subsequent murder, was part of a plot by Dewani and cab driver Zola Tongo, Mziwamadoda Qwabe and gunman Xolile Mngeni to have Anni killed.

The defence maintain that Shrien Dewani had played no part in planning the murder.

Judge Traverso had considered the case since 25 November and heard evidence from both the prosecution and defence teams.

For three years authorities in South Africa battled to get the former businessman extradited to the country and the decision by Judge Traverso to throw out the case will be seen as a highly controversial for a number of spectators and legal officials in South Africa.
