'Racist' London bus rant: Police arrest man after video emerges of attack on elderly Turkish man in Tottenham
Officers now believe the incident, footage of which appeared on YouTube on Sunday night, took place on Saturday 17 October
Police have arrested a man in connection with a video posted to YouTube of a "racist" rant on a London bus.
In a video reported by The Independent on Monday, a man could be seen issuing a torrent of abuse towards an apparently elderly victim on a bus in Tottenham, north London.
The man in the video can be heard shouting a range of xenophobic and Islamophobic insults, including “go back to Turkey” and “I’ll shove a pig’s c*** in your mouth, what’s f****** Allah going to say about that? Put you on a page with Big Dave.”
At the end of the video, the man can be seen throwing his apparent victim’s white Zimmer frame down the street, before walking away pushing a pram.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said a 25-year-old man attended a north London police station on Monday evening. “He was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence,” a spokesperson said. “He remains in custody at a north London police station.”
Officers now believe the incident shown in the video took place on Saturday. The footage was uploaded to YouTube on Sunday afternoon, and was shared widely on social media.
On Monday night, Transport for London’s buses chief Mike Weston told The Independent: “This type of behaviour will not be tolerated on our network. Our passengers must be allowed to travel without fear of verbal or physical assault - we will provide the police with every assistance as they investigate this totally unacceptable incident.”
Anyone who was on the bus, travelling along the A10 High Road in Tottenham, was asked to contact Haringey police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
