Paedophile found hanged in jail cell

Tuesday 02 March 2010 16:40 GMT

A convicted paedophile was found hanging in his prison cell, the Prison Service said today.

Barry Camwell, 30, an inmate at Wandsworth Prison in south west London, is thought to have killed himself.

He was jailed for eight years in 2002 for raping a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Dover, Kent.

He was let out on licence at the halfway point of his sentence but returned to prison in September 2007 after breaching the terms of his release.

While living at a probation hostel in Maidstone, he is believed to have approached another young girl.

Attempts by prison staff to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at 9.45am yesterday.

A routine investigation will be conducted by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "HMP Wandsworth prisoner Barry Camwell was found hanging in his cell by staff at 9.30am on Monday March 1.

"Staff attempted resuscitation and an ambulance was called but Mr Camwell was pronounced dead at 9.45am.

"As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman."
