Buckinghamshire businessman and millionaire John Campbell raped air hostess after spiking drink

'If she had her ability to consent to sex taken away from her by the drug then having sex in these circumstances is rape'

A millionaire businessman has been convicted of raping an air hostess after spiking her drink.

John Campbell, 65, was also found guilty of administering a substance with intent to overpower or allow sexual activity at Amersham Crown Court.

Campbell, who headed up several mortgage and loan companies, met the victim on a dating website, believed to be millionairematch.com. They had been involved in a relationship for around six months, the Daily Mail reported.

The attack took place after the pair had been drinking in the back garden of Campbell’s home in Buckinghamshire on 14 June 2014. The jury heard that Campbell drugged her drink with ecstasy.

The woman then remembered waking up in bed naked. She also realised she had been sick.

Campbell tried to tell her she had food poisoning, the court heard.

After the victim went home the following day, she had blood and urine tests. She later went to the police and it was found that the drug MDMA had been in her system around the time of the incident.

Prosecution Alisdair Smith told the court: “If she had her ability to consent to sex taken away from her by the drug then having sex in these circumstances is rape.”

Judge Karen Holt said: “He said that she started becoming passionate. She wanted a cuddle and come forward and kissed him on the lips. He hadn’t thought there would be any sexual passion.”

Campbell was acquitted of a further count of rape. He will be sentenced on 18 December.
