A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash, police said today.

Stephen Wood, 39, died in the early hours of yesterday after being hit by three cars near Ilkley in West Yorkshire.

Two of the vehicles failed to stop at the scene, on the A65 Skipton Road between Ilkley and Addingham, West Yorkshire Police said.

A force spokeswoman said a 38-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and is currently being held in police custody.

One of the drivers of the vehicles, a woman, was this morning still helping crash officers with their inquiries.

It is thought Mr Wood was drinking at the Vaults pub in Ilkley on Saturday night, and it is possible he left and headed out along the Skipton Road.

Joe McDermott, manager of The Vaults, said Mr Wood was a regular at the pub but added that he did not know him well and did not know much about the circumstances surrounding his death.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "We are urging the drivers of both of the cars that didn't stop after colliding with Stephen to contact us.

"I would also ask anyone who has suspicions about a friend or relative being involved to let us know.

"We are currently examining CCTV in the area with a view to identifying the drivers involved."

Anyone who has any information should call Sergeant Carole Clayton on 01924 293047 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
