A man has appeared in court accused of deliberately driving a van into people queueing at a food bank in Derbyshire.

Four people were injured, two of them seriously, in the alleged attack in the village of Kirk Hallam on Friday morning.

Martin Casey, 37, was charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, one count of driving a motor vehicle dangerously, and three counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.

Derbyshire Police officers were called to reports of a collision outside Kirk Hallam Community Hall in Kenilworth Drive at 9am.

Mr Casey, of Long Eaton, Derbyshire, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Monday wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey jogging bottoms.

He spoke only to confirm his name, address, date of birth and nationality during a short hearing.

The suspect was remanded into custody and will next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 5 August.
