Police are trying to trace a young woman who was filmed being sexually assaulted while on holiday in Corfu.

Essex Police have been handed footage from a video camera which shows the victim, who is in her late teens and believed to be British, passed out on a hotel bed.

It is believed she was unconscious after a drunken night out in the Kavos area in the early hours of July 30.

A man is seen assaulting the partially clothed woman in a clip which lasts several minutes.

The "shocking" assault is among a series of more routine holiday clips featured on the tape.

Detective Inspector Hayley King said: "We don't know when the young woman returned to the UK or which airport she flew back into. We strongly believe that she is from the UK.

"The offence took place in a hotel room. We don't though know which hotel it is in Kavos, and there are many."

Detectives, who have been investigating for months, have now decided to make their appeal public in a bid to trace the victim.

It is believed most of the people staying in the resort at the time were British and officers suspect her attacker was a fellow Briton who was holidaying with a group of friends.

In a bid to help the victim identify herself, police have said she was wearing a number of coloured wristbands obtained from local clubs.

Kavos is a popular resort with British tourists and famed for its wild nightlife.
