Derbyshire police are talking to a man over an incident where he apparently approached a toddler in a busy shopping centre.

CCTV footage shows the man approaching the child as he walks just behind his mother, before taking him by the hand outside of a Boots store in the Intu shopping centre on 8 May.

Seconds later, the mother turns around and become aware of the incident and appears to confront the man. After a brief conversation, he walks away.

Police subsequently released footage of the incident and appealed for information, which lead to a man contacting them, who believes he is the person in the footage.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Lamb said: “It appears that the man shown in the CCTV footage may have been acting with good intentions but we will be speaking to him today to ascertain the full details.

“We received a large number of calls on the back of the appeal and I would like to thank members of the public for their response.

“It was a highly unusual incident and we will be continuing our inquiries into it today.”
