A man aged 23 has been charged in connection with an incident that led to yesterday's temporary closure of Gatwick Airport.

Matthew Carney, from Melbourne, Australia, is accused of intending to induce a false belief that a device "liable to explode or ignite" was in a plane's cargo.

An Emirates flight was evacuated after arriving from Dubai.

Carney appeared before Crawley magistrates via videolink and remanded in custody until Thursday.
