At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. People in Mexico turned out in their tens of thousands to look up at the optical illusion that created a perfect circle of light around the Sun.
According to scientists, the crystals cause the light to be refracted and reflected, leading to the rainbow coloured circle appearing around the sun.
Experts did say though that the halo that appeared in Mexico on Thursday was a particularly good example of the weather event as it could be seen from three different cities.
