Pippa Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister, has given birth to a son.

The boy, weighing 8lb and 9oz, was born on Monday afternoon at St Mary’s Hospital in west London, announced Ms Middleton and her husband James Matthews.

“Everyone is delighted and mother and baby are doing well,” a spokeswoman for the couple added.

The birth came hours after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they were expecting a child, and three days after the royals attended Princess Eugenie’s wedding.

Ms Middleton and her husband were seen arriving at the private maternity wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington – the same unit where her sister gave birth to her three children.

Kate Middleton and Prince William were the first to publicly congratulate them on the birth of their child.

In a statement released by Kensington Palace, they said: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are thrilled for Pippa and James.”

Pippa had provided updates throughout her pregnancy in her fitness column for Waitrose.

She recently wrote: “As the final month nears and the bump grows prouder each day, movement is certainly getting more awkward.

“As a result, one of the biggest changes is that my lower body has tightened up.”

Heavily pregnant Pippa attended Eugenie's wedding to James Brooksbank at Windsor Castle on Friday.

Ms Middleton married Mr Matthews in May.
