Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Professor Green has been announced as the new patron of Calm, a charity committed to preventing vulnerable young men from taking their own lives.

Campaign Against Living Miserably has been able to offer support for more than 30,000 callers thanks to its helpline and webchat over the last year.

“We need to get the message out to young men that talking and asking for help when things go bad is what everyone should be able to do, whatever their gender, and it's fantastic to see brands like Lynx and Topman put their weight behind Calm and help create the cultural change which will help save lives,” Professor Green said.

Jane Powell, Calm chief executive, added: “While mental health has risen up the agenda, urgent funding is still required as more money needs to be dedicated to this service in the years to come, but with all the will in the world that won't create the social change needed to tackle male suicide.

“Having Professor Green and brands like Lynx and Topman help us share the message that it's OK to talk, however, will help us foment the cultural change we need to finally tackle this issue.

“On behalf of everyone at Calm, I would like to thank David Baddiel for his work and commitment over the last seven years. His support and passion for this cause has been unswerving and his dedication has helped us to progress our campaign. We now look forward to working with Professor Green to continue this work.”

Professor Green, real name Stephen Manderson, has long been a vocal campaigner on the issue following his father’s death from suicide six years ago.

He takes over from comedian David Baddiel.

“I'm very honoured to have been the patron of Calm for the last seven years,” Baddiel added. “Over that time, it's done a brilliant job of raising public consciousness about the overwhelming problem of male suicide, and of providing a resource and lifeline for men who are depressed and feel they have no one to talk to.

“I'd also like to welcome Professor Green to the patron post. I know he'll have a great time working with this amazing charity.”
