From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Each year the annual Met Gala generates much hype in the form of internet gossip, best-dressed lists and, usually, memes.

Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city, the theme for 2016 was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. This meant futuristic, technology-inspired designs modelled by a wealth of high-profile singers, models and actors.

The theme was more evident in some outfits than others, with Zayn Malik sporting bionic arms over his Versace suit and Katy Perry turning up with a 90s Tamagotchi around her neck. Other red carpet arrivals included Beyonce, Kim Kardashian-West and Kanye West, Cindy Crawford and Idris Elba. Click through the gallery for more looks:

The guestlist is approved of by US Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour who has chaired the event since 1995. This year, Taylor Swift was also a co-host.

Tickets for the annual invitation-only event reportedly cost £20,5000 ($30,000) and the proceeds go to the museum’s costume institute.
