From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Madonna has defended her son’s decision to share explicit violent footage of what appears to be terrorist killings.

Rocco Ritchie, 14, posted a clip of armed men repeatedly shooting a group of children lying on the ground.

He also suggested that the footage should help put any other problems into perspective.

“I think if your still being a dick to people, I would stop,” he wrote in his accompanying caption. “We've got a little worse of a problem on are hands here guys. We don't need more negative ass holes here [sic].”

The film violates Instagram’s community guidelines which stipulate that shared content should be suitable for all ages. Videos and photos of “extreme violence or gore” may lead to accounts being disabled.

“You may not post violent, nude, partially nude, discriminatory, unlawful, infringing, hateful, pornographic or sexually suggestive photos or other content via the Service,” reads Instagram’s terms of use.

However, Madonna has celebrated Ritchie’s post and his expression of “outrage”.

“I applaud my Sons desire to express his outrage by posting footage of ISIS on instagram,” she wrote.

“Humans are becoming numb to this violent imagery. He is saying our problems are nothing compared to whats going on around the world. Freedom Fighting is in his blood. Lets pray for PEACE! #rebelheart #livingforlove [sic]”

Madonna and Ritchie performed together at her Hyde Park gig in 2012.
