From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Halloween, by default, is a breeding ground for offensive and downright distasteful getups and rows over cultural appropriation. This year saw Hilary Duff forced to apologise after she and her boyfriend Jason Walsh garnered criticism for dressing as a pilgrim and native American.
But not all celebrities land themselves in hot water for culturally appropriative headdresses. Lena Dunham has done the opposite and won the praise of onlookers. The Girls creator and actor took Donald Trump’s now notorious “p***y-grabbing” comments for inspiration and dressed up as a literal “grabbed pussy”.
From the chest upwards, Dunham looked like a run-of-the-mill pussy cat, but downwards two creepy hands appeared clutching at choice parts of her body.
“Happy Halloween! With love from a Grabbed Pussy,” Dunham wrote on her Instagram photo.
This is, of course, a direct reference to the Republican candidate’s leaked tape from 2005 which recently surfaced in which Mr Trump could be heard bragging about groping and making unwanted advances on women. The billionaire boasted that he was such a “star” he can grab women “by the p***y”.
Mr Trump initially dismissed his lewd and sexually aggressive comments as “locker room” talk but then apologised for his remarks in a 90 second long apology. Nevertheless, he continued to repeatedly describe the remarks as “locker room talk” when pressed during the second presidential debate.
Dunham is a vocal Hillary Clinton supporter and has criticised Mr Trump on a number of occasions in the past.
